Is homework beneficial?

Is homework beneficial?

Is homework beneficial? Some people would say yes and no. These are some opinions and answers on why  and how homework can be beneficial. And why it can cause stress in some circumstances. Lets dig in

Who created homework?

According to theedadvocate.org Roberto Nevelis is credited with creating  homework in 1905. Roberto Nevelis invented homework because it was a way to punish students who didn't show or demonstrate a good understanding of the lessons and classes taught during class. He wanted students to behave in class so he created a mechanism called homework where students would have to do work at home as a punishment. He created homework by wanting to think of a genius idea to “punish students” and this is one solution that worked. After his idea started getting published after getting called “genius” schools started to take it into consideration and schools finally started to use his method of homework. Later into the year of 1905 his idea was famous and went worldwide as it spread through europe and then america and to this day schools still use homework. Homework used to be a great idea but only for punishments and now schools make it a priority to do school work at home and catch up on work.

How can homework be stressful?

For a long time now schools, teachers, parents and even students have been protesting against homework as saying it is a waste of time and it doesn't affect their childrens or students life in a good way. Kids get stressed with homework because they can have too much homework and it can be stressful. Kids are supposed to go home and play outside but instead they go home and go straight to books and computers which is also unhealthy for eyesight posture creativity and it's just sad to see this society of kids only on electronics and devices and homework online also has affected and impacted kids to spend even more time on screens.

Students and teachers opinions

I interviewed some students and teachers. Grade 7 student, Lydia Ylikorkola, said “I think homework can be beneficial but is often overused in school life because we get too much homework too often and though it is good it blocks our creative mindset and takes away our free time.” I also interviewed Elena Brennikmajer, and she said “It depends because homework is beneficial to learn and understand more than you can already learn in class but I feel like schools could do a better job communicating to other teachers about how much homework they are giving and when it's due.''

Finally I interviewed Ms Shipley the counselor in the middle school and she gave me a very open answer  “I think that [homework] can be beneficial if a student is practicing a skill already learned in school. I think that there is such a thing as too much homework and that can cause high levels of stress and conflict with parents.”

In my opinion I think homework is beneficial but it has limits. If there's too much work to do at home it can cause stress. There needs to be a limit to learning at home but also to have a healthy mindset. So everyone has different opinions so there is no right answer what do you think?
